"Gardening requires lots of water--most of it in the form of perspiration." (-Lou Erickson)

We've planted lots of perennials and bulbs over the years. Initially, our thinking was that once you plant those, they pretty much take care of themselves: they pop up again every year, right? Pretty much gluttons for punishment, though, we dream up new concoctions every year for “what to do with the garden.”

One year, it was “let’s add an arbor.” Of course, if one has an arbor, one must have a climbing vine on it. And then, one must put a path beneath it. This year, we yanked out our pampas grasses and planted roses in their place. We’ve put a wall of stones along a walk, and we’re attempting to add a path along one side of the house. I've also come up with a new spot for another arbor as an entryway to a path I want us to do.
We tend to forget that in the middle of all that work, there’s still the weeding, dead-heading and cutting fresh flowers for inside the house. Gardening never really stops. There are always new ideas...But we love all the color and all the flowers from our own yard sitting here looking pretty inside. Not to mention the fact that all those flowers provide wonderful sketching opportunities. We basically just enjoy gardening…

I imagine your climate is a little like ours in that we have to garden relentlessly. Never any chance to kick back and read seed catalogues.

Your garden is lovely, indeed, and I love the fact that you're still adding to it and revising. I'm afraid we're beyond that. Nowhere does the saying "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak" seem more appropriate. My head still envisions changes and improvements, but we're about to turn it over to being "God's garden" with a little help from our steadfast once-a-week gardener, Jorge.

Your garden is lovely. and I know the camera just doesnt capture HOW lovely it is in person too.
We too are into arbors and things growing on them. Con keeps making them.
I was out watering my Rhodys under the eves of our front of house awhile ago and a bird ran out. at first a couple days ago I thought it was a frog. Then I saw a bird run out like a road runner really quick. I looked but saw no nest.
Today I saw it as I was almost nose to nose with it. I moved away and the bird flew up to a tree above me talking at me and in the bed under a Rhody plant on a bed of alyssum is a nest with FOUR LILAC EGGS WITH DOTS. It is a Rufus sided towhee. I am so stoked. I have to keep up the watering or I will lose all my plants in there as it has been so hot but I see I can leave it run on the ground and it wont get the nest and since she is in the sun it will help cool her and the babies when they hatch. Of course we are supposed to get cooler some rain. So I might not have to worry. :)But what a treat.

We do enjoy the flowers, so we'll always garden.

Cris, that's exciting about your bird! Hope you get to watch them grow up. I'm not sure if I've seen one of those before.
