"Sin on a Stick"

So who knew today was “National Chocolate Day?

At least according to the folks at Valparaiso University in Indiana, today, it was! The building where I met with students had the aromatic smells of chocolate wafting through the halls when I arrived. A vendor was at hand, pouring out batter, making Belgian waffles, and generously ladling oozy chocolate sauces over what were prepared like corn dogs on a stick!

He dubbed these treats “Sin on a Stick,” and from the looks of the faces leaving the table, I think he was right.

Toppings included whipped cream, crushed oreos, chopped nuts and m&m’s. There were smiles all around, and throughout the day, as lines gathered, disappeared, and gathered again, I had lots of students suddenly expressing an interest in learning more about the environment today…

Who knew? Ahhhh, the powers of chocolate...Tomorrow, I head home after Trip#1...One trip down, 4 trips to go. Life is good.

You sound so relieved (at a job well done, I'll bet!) and so happy, too. I love this story of chocolate and young people that you've told with color and panache. Enjoy your weekend at home---the weather is supposed to be lovely and autumnal.

Oh YUM!!! I can smell that chocolate from here!! I am vertually enjoying a "sin on a stick".

Your pix look so much like Read Hall at IU where my daughter did her undergrad work.

I hope I never encounter one of those in real life, because I know I would never be able to resist it!

As a born and bred Belgian, I feel compelled to point out that If you like chocolate on your waffles, best eat them in the US of A. We eat our waffles with just a dusting of sugar or honey and, in season, with fresh strawberries and sugar, rarely with whipped cream.
If you want a real treat, cut 2 slices of freshly baked bread, slather with soft salted butter and stick a dark chocolate bar between the two. If no one is around to be offended, dip into very strong black coffee and enjoy another death by chocolate ;-)

Thanks, all! I arrived home for a few days and then head right back out on Monday to the west coast this time.

Willow, those flags hanging are so similar to many schools I visit--I know University of Richmond looks just like that too--they typically hang flags of all the countries represented by international students at their school.

I didn't know it was National Chocolate Day either but I think it's a good idea to have one of those here and there! ;))

Francoise, your version of Belgian waffles sounds scrumptious--I think only America would come up with something as decadent as "sin on a stick!"

that freshly baked bread with chocolate sandwiched between sounds awesome! Yum! and dipped into coffee...oh, man! ;))

Thanks, Kathy--I'm busy tonight doing expense report spreadsheets, and then tomorrow I'll be mailing off boxes of materials to about 5 different hotels on the west coast so I'll have things when I get there. I did my laundry today, and hopefully I can relax a bit this weekend. Then it's back to the races Monday. I'll try to blog when I can! Have a great time at dinner with your husband tonight! And definitely eat some chocolate! ;))

Where abouts will you be going on the West Coast? Hope you get some rest. :)

Cris, I head to several "Idealist" fairs in--first: San Francisco, then LA, then Portland, just a day or so from one another, so I'll be flying a lot, then Seattle, and then from there, I head to a number of individual schools throughout western and then eastern Washington state. It'll be a busy trip. Then several other trips after that, too...
