Dog Days

More Sketchbook Project sketches...

This is one of the hottest summers I can remember! We arrived home in North Carolina from staying with my dad in Georgia, and at 4:30pm, it was 101 degrees when we looked at the temp. It's really like an oven out there.

In Georgia, my sister and her husband's poor dog Bubba was feeling the heat, too. He sprawled flat out like a frog on the rug and on the cool floor whenever he could. And daddy is home from the hospital and recuperating as well as he can. He's been through a lot, and happy to be back home!

"Louder than a clap of thunder,

louder than an eagle screams,
louder than a dragon blunders,
or a dozen football teams,
louder than a four-alarmer,
or a rushing waterfall,
louder than a knight in armour
jumping from a ten foot wall.
Louder than an earthquake rumbles,
louder than a tidal wave,
louder than an ogre grumbles
as he stumbles through his cave,
louder than stampeding cattle,
louder than a cannon roars,
louder than a giant's rattle,
that's how loud my father SNORES!"

(--Jack Prelutsky)

The other night, my dad, Joe, AND Bubba were all snoring like that. (I wondered if I was, too!)

Poor Bubba is deathly afraid of thunder and lightning, and while there was no rain in Georgia, the rumbling had him frightened and curled up close by the whole time.

"They say marriages are made in heaven...but so is thunder and lightning."
(--Clint Eastwood)

Bubba is very handsome and it looks like he is fun to sketch or paint. Enjoyed the poem, too.

My daughter's brown and white Corgi used to stretch out like this on the kitchen tile floor.

Bubba is a cutie and you did a great job painting him. Annie will stretch out like that sometimes. Its so funny. I hope your Dad does better now that he is home. Getting old sure isnt for sissies! Ouch on the heat. wow. We got up that high last year. Not fun and you get all that humidity too. Hope it starts cooling off soon. Thats for the well wishes too.

Wonderful doggie sketches and I LOVE THE DOG!!
I am deathly afraid of thunder and lightening and of course forgot my purse at the lecture at the Museum(I was snoozing) so we had to go back thru the thunder and lightening to get it and then home thru it AGAIN!
Ach! I was lucky to get the purse back but the storm I couldh have done without so easily
AND the FOG while driving :(

Sweetest Bubba ever!
Our dachshund takes up the same positions.
The top sketch reflects our Maxie's way to throw himself down on the tile floor in the kitchen, possibly right between my feet and the cabinet where I am working. Somehow I have learned to dance around him, we don't get into each other's way, unless he changes position too stealthily, then we may get into trouble.
The position on the bottom picture is called "chicken legs" by the children. Maxie just loves to stretch like this (makes him look much more substantial than he really is, the little fellow).

I had to smile when I read the Ben Shahn quote about his reason to become interested in photography. Probably mine too. Well, it is my reason, no talent to paint at all. ;-)

Thanks, everyone! Carol, I'm glad you got your purse!

Merisi, Maxie sounds adorable. As for painting--I often think I have none at all either, but I can't take good photos, so I'm helpless! Your photos are beautiful.
