The Naming of Cats (--TS Eliot)
The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo, or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey--
All of them sensible, everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter--
But all of them sensible, everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum--
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover--
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable, effable,
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.
(--TS Eliot)
When Eric was young, I used to read to him from Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, and I still smile when I read Eliot's wonderful poems that he wrote for his grandchildren.

Beautiful, loose essence of cat, Sue. And thank you for the fond memories Eliot brings back of sitting in class hearing this poem for the first time and then discovering, miracle of miracles, I could borrow a copy of the whole book from something called the Municipal Library. :)
Thank you for this wonderful post, Sue. I'm embarrassed to say that I'd never read it before. (I've got 4 cats in the house, too:))
Thanks, folks! Robyn, I remember being so excited to get a library card as a kid!
Petale, merci!
Candy, do you remember the musical "Cats" that was so popular at one point? The lyrics were all from Eliot's poems from the book I mentioned: the "Jellicle" cats!
I love that poem and remember the Broadway show VERY well. My son was in 3rd grade when we saw it. We got our 2 cats that summer and he named them after cats from the show! Magical Mr. Mistopheliese and Musketrap
Your illustrations are lovely as always--love the one at the top especially!
Cool names, Judy!! Yes--the play was fun. The costumes were crazy!
Of course, he doesn't make mention that the cat will not come regardless of which name you call!!
Love the sketch, Sue, and it's perfect for the poem!
Love the new watercolor banner and Love the chat!
Laure, so true! Funny.
Carol, thanks. I'll have to try more chats; they're fun.
Love the paintings! ANd it's so much fun to read tse's lighter work!
The cat is great! And the poem too!
I've been wondering for a while now: how do you get the backgrounds so white? When I make a picture of my work, the background always is a bit coloured mostly light blue.
Thanks, Jeanette and Judy.
Judy, this is actually not a photo but a scan. Trust me, when I take a photo, it's dingy and dreary--either blue background or a brownish-sepia look to it! I try to scan things when I can so it shows the way it really looks "in person."
Aha okay I'll try that! Thanks!
a cat made of beautiful "marks" sue ... your new year post made me smile ..happy 2011 to you.
A Very Happy New Year to you as well, Jane. Thanks!
I am mesmerized by your juicy loose style, Sue. Yet it's still so precise and clear to see your subject. Love the style it's very unique and special.
Thanks, Katie--you're very kind to say so! I'll keep practicing.
Your cat rocks, Sue.
Awww, Jennifer, thanks--especially coming from you, I'm flattered! Your "critters" are always so fabulous.
