"Practice is the best of all instructors" (-Publilius Syrus)

Thank you to everyone who sent me such sweet notes and good wishes.  I've never been gone from my blog this long before, so I apologize for losing touch.    I had been sick, and then,  life just caught up with me, and I had no time at all to get to my blog.

It's also been weeks since I picked up a paintbrush, and boy, can I tell!  I feel like I'm starting all over again.  That said, though, I'm actually a firm believer in taking time, stepping back, and letting the creative juices bubble up again when they're supposed to.

I was visiting my dad, (who lives with my sister's family, in Georgia) this past weekend.  My brother-in-law, the biologist, has been the recipient of several mugs I've had made for him with some of my watercolor bird images on them.  He's got mugs with a bluebird, (of course,) a tufted titmouse, a ruby-crested kinglet, and a  Carolina chickadee on them.  On this last visit, he smiled and told me he "needs" one of a red-breasted woodpecker, so I'll have to get busy and practice those, so I can make him another mug.

I'd told myself that I want to do some more portraits, and I'm going to do my best to get cranking on some of those, but let's face it, birds are sort of portraits, too, right?

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

And here's my new mantra:
"What a player does best, he should practice least.  Practice is for problems."   (-Unknown)

My talented friend, Rick Tulka, once told me to chill out about learning, and I've never forgotten what he said:

"Don't worry.  Just keep going.  Play, move forward, fall back, it's all a game."

He's so right...

Your woodpecker does NOT support your comments...however, I know how you feel. I'm suddenly in frustrated period - no progress for some time now! I'll take your advice and Rick's!

Are you using the DS Watercolor Ground as the base for painting on mugs? Or what?

And how do you seal them so that they can be used?

Thanks!

And I love your red breasted woodpecker. So live, so accurate, so lovely.

My fav teach, Susannah ----- had the opposite take from Rick. She said just paint and paint and paint and you'll get some good stuff.

Thanks, all! Gwendolyn, I used the zazzle website, and they basically take your artwork and make it for you, so, no--I didn't use the Daniel Smith watercolor ground, although I do know what you're referring to. Here is a link:

You should try it--they're fun!

I find even if I miss painting for a couple of days I'm not quite as confident when I go back, so I paint something I know to loosen up

Your bird's pose is wonderful. so much personality!

My giant easel sits in the corner and leaning against the wall? An oil on canvas, twenty of them. It's been a year since I last picked up a brush.

My husband threatens to move the easel into the garage. It was a gift from him.

Technique and color is not the issue..

But, subject matter.

Nice compostion today

What a sweet little bird!
I was watching a Van Gogh documentary and he was talking about the problems and frustrations with drawing. It made me feel so much better! :)

Welcome back, Sue,
so good to see you and hear that you are feeling well again!

I love your bird paintings, the woodpecker looks very good! I saw one just the other day, down on the grass. A day or two before that, I watched a pair of Green Woodpeckers, also feeding and playing in the grass. Never before have i seen any of the woodpeckers feeding under a tree. A friend told me that there are actually five different woodpeckers in our area. They are such beautiful birds!

A wonderful weekend to you,
Merisi
