"Don't worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you" (-Robert Fulghum)

Child Development

As sure as prehistoric fish grew legs
and sauntered off the beaches into forests
working up some irregular verbs for their
first conversation, so three-year-old children
enter the phase of name-calling.

Every day a new one arrives and is added
to the repertoire.  You Dumb Goopyhead,
You Big Sewerface, You Poop-on-the-Floor
(a kind-of Navajo ring to that one)
they yell from knee-level, their little mugs
flushed with challenge.
Nothing Samuel Johnson would bother tossing out
in a pub, but then the toddlers are not trying
to devastate some fatuous Enlightenment hack.

They are just tormenting their fellow squirts
or going after the attention of the giants
way up there with their cocktails and bad breath
talking baritone nonsense to other giants,
waiting to call them names after thanking
them for the lovely party and hearing the door close.

The mature save their hothead invective
for things: an errant hammer, tire chains,
or receding trains missed by seconds,
though they know in their adult hearts,
even as they threaten to banish Timmy to bed
for his appalling behavior,
that their bosses are Big Fatty Stupids,
their wives are Dopey Dopeheads
and that they themselves are Mr. Sillypants.

(--Billy Collins)

Nice picture and it goes so well with your post. Yep, kids copy the adults so where is all the bullying coming from that we see today? Maybe from the dad that goes berserk at a Little League Practice or some other thing like that? Reality TV?

Beeeautful painting!
The girls remind me of Mary Cassatt's "Children on the Beach".

Sue already mentioned that I love Billy Collins, this poem is not exception.

Oh, this is wonderful :)

Are the children little adults, or are the adults still children - it's a real puzzle.

So perfect that I am reading this today! I have been herding squirrels at work this week! The kids are absolutely nuts and today one was doing everything he could to annoy his "friend"... ah .... glad I got that off my chest.

I am eating salad and enjoying a little glass of Bordeaux and decided to come visit. I'm glad I did. LOVE the watercolor. Hope you are have a lovely peaceful week. :)

Hello, Sue. I can't say for certain that I have not stopped by here before, but I don't think I have ever left a comment.
I just read your account of your "corn off the cob" at Willow Manor-- what a precious childhood story.
I too, really like Billy Collins. I think I will use this poem with my high school students who can break out some insulting names on occaision and pray they will have fun using some of these rather than the....uh er .... well the ones that require discipline referrals!
Your paintings....well....the softness and delicacy somehow convey such strong images!! How do you do that?? I really like your work. Do you ever do pet portraits?

Thanks, everyone!

FireLight, thank you--I've not done pet portraits, but my brother-in-law wants me to do some for him, so I'll have to practice.
